The First 5 Things You Should Do After Getting Engaged

The-First-5-Things-You-Should-Do-After-Getting-Engaged

So, you’re engaged! Congratulations! The celebration has just begun. You have so many people to tell the good news to, and so much to look forward to.

Amidst all the joy, you’re probably going to start thinking to yourself, How are we going to plan this? How long is it going to take to plan this? What color will the flowers be? How many people should we invite? The list can go on and on, and you might feel a little overwhelmed. But, we’re here to save the day! If you’re wondering exactly what you should do after you get engaged, we have the scoop. Here are 5 things you should do after you pop that champagne and tell your families.

1. Discuss with each other what kind of wedding you both want.

When that ring is slipped onto your finger, you’re going to be consumed in thoughts of your dress, those gorgeous red centerpieces you always wanted, and the live band playing classical music as you take your first steps onto the dance floor. But…wait. What if that’s not the wedding that your significant other has in mind? Before you get carried away in your thoughts, you both need to discuss with each other what kind of wedding you both want. Big, or small? Luxurious, or simple? There are lots of details you need to discuss and agree on before you can actually plan anything.

2. Decide on a budget.

Once you figure out what kind of wedding you want, you need to decide how much money you both want to spend. Has either one of you been saving up for this event? Will your parents be contributing? Discuss this together, and have a dollar amount for how much you would like to spend. You should also set an exact figure for what is the absolute cap on the budget. Once you start planning the wedding, it’s so easy to go overboard on things you don’t really need. If you have a dollar amount set in your mind, it’ll be easier to choose what you need, and what you don’t need.

3. Make the guest list.

This part can be completely daunting. There are so many people you want to share your special day with…but your significant other has a list, too. By the time you’re both done making your lists, you could end up with a guest list of 500 people. So, take a step back and discuss who you really want to attend. It helps to have an A-list and a B. Put the people who you are most important to you on the A-list. People like your parents, siblings, and other immediate families, as well as your best friends and bridal party members. On the B list, put people you want to invite, but may not make the cut depending on your budget and venue. Tell your fiancée to do the same, and then you can both look at each other’s lists and discuss them together.

4. Decide on the venue, and then the date.

Pick those details in that order. It’s best to choose two or three venues that you love, that way you have some options. You should visit each one of them to make sure they’re right for you and the kind of wedding you want. Choose your favorite one and ask about available dates. If having a Spring wedding is really important to you, and your favorite venue only has Autumn dates available, then you still have the two other venues you chose. One out of the three venues is bound to have a date that works for you and what you envision.

5. Have fun!

Throughout all this planning and prepping, don’t forget to have a great time. Yes, there is so much to do, but it’s all going towards one of the best days of your life. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Set a date that gives you enough time to plan your amazing day. And, above all, enjoy being engaged! Enjoy introducing your significant other as your “fiancée” for the next several months. Enjoy telling your family and friends about your engagement, and seeing their eyes light up in excitement. Time is going to fly by, so make the most of it!
